What is cloud computing and how does it work?

Cloud computing is a trending term these days. But what does it really mean and how does it work? The term itself is not new, cloud computing represents a variety of services that make up servers for hosting, databases, networking, software, analytics and intelligence. This means using remote servers to host and access data instead of relying on local hard drives or private data centers. Providing such services offers faster innovation, flexible resources and economies of scale.

As it flows, you typically only pay for the cloud services you use, helping you reduce operating costs. This way, you manage your infrastructure more efficiently and scale as your business needs change.

Before cloud computing?

You might be wondering how it worked before cloud computing existed? The answer is that organizations had to buy and maintain their own servers to meet their business needs. This resulted in buying enough server space to reduce the risk of downtime and outages, and to handle the peak traffic volume. Today’s cloud service providers allow businesses to reduce the need for in-house servers, maintenance staff and other costly IT resources.

How does cloud computing work?

Following this short introduction to cloud computing, it is necessary to mention that not all clouds are the same and no one type of cloud computing is suitable for all companies.

The most important companies hosting cloud computing are major players like Amazon (Amazon Web Services), Microsoft (Azure), Apple (iCloud) and Google (Google Drive), but there are also other players – big and small. These hosting companies can sell rights to use their clouds and store data on their networks, while providing the end user with an ecosystem that can communicate between devices and programs.

There are generally 3 different ways to deploy cloud services: on public cloud, private cloud or hybrid cloud

– Private cloud provides a proprietary cloud environment dedicated to a single business entity, with physical components stored in-house or in a vendor’s data center. Since the private cloud is only accessible to a single company, this model offers a high level of control.

– The public cloud uses the internet to store and manage access to data and applications. It is fully virtualized, providing an environment where shared resources are leveraged as needed.

– Hybrid cloud computing is a combination of public and private models. Both types of cloud are linked by the internet and can share resources when needed (for example, if the private cloud reaches its storage capacity or is corrupted, the public cloud can step in and save the day).
